This apartment is one of seven units Kass & Associates designed as part of the adaptive- reuse of a former printing company headquarters into a residential condominium. building on Philadelphia’s Washington Square. The building, on the east side of Philadelphia’s Washington Square, was built for the Lippincott Publishing Company in 1901.

Our clients are avid collectors of modern art, including significant ceramic pieces, classic and contemporary furniture, and works by numerous folk and “Outsider” artists. Having lived for many years in a four story townhouse in the Society Hill section of the city, they wished to consolidate their art collection onto one floor, while still capturing the character and feel of their previous house.

Beginning with raw, open space, the new apartment is divided into an enfilade of gallery and room-like spaces. The Billiard Room exposes sand blasted steel column brackets and a portion of the heavy timber wood ceilings that recall the building’s former mercantile use.

Track lighting and adjustable down-lighting provide flexibility for the Owner’s changing exhibit of their art collection and furnishings. Artwork is protected from direct sun exposure by large shutters with adjustable wood louvers.
